What will make CLA's 2010 a must-attend Conference ?

This IdeaScale is an example--there are many applications but which really work for library-related functions? Have early adopters teach the rest of us in a casual setting.
75% of CLA Survey respondents (feedback on 2009 conference) identified this as a high priority topic for 2010 conference programming. Please add comments to flesh out what this means for you...
How can we join together to create a louder voice for libraries?
Opportunities for students and new librarians to have face time with managers, leaders, and other people with influence.
For those of us tired of waiting for public library positions to open up -- give us info not just on other types of librarianship but ideas on where MLIS graduates can look for work in the private sector, research, etc. etc.
What can recent MLIS grads do to make our resume stand out? Which new skills should we take classes on (and where)? Where can we look for networking events? Where should we volunteer?
At the 2008 CLA Conference in San Jose, Dr. Ken Haycock discussed the importance of libraries marketing to specific demographic niches, with intent, and measurable outcomes. An example: Library staff discovering how they can help recent immigrants receive necessary public services and then providing these immigrants with "read more about it" resources. Another key element of this is how to devise a mechanism for obtaining continuous customer feedback...something we librarians could do a lot better. An example: We helped you with a high school term paper last month. Did you get a better grade on the term paper because of the help you received at the library?
How do e-readers, the iPad, audiobooks, the decline of newspapers affect our readers and our libraries?
How are libraries implementing services on mobile devices? Topics include text message alerts and program reminders, materials for mobile readers, location-aware devices, and mobile-optimized websites.
45% of CLA Survey respondents (feedback on 2009 conference) wanted this topic to appear in programming for 2010. Please add comments to flesh out what this might mean for you...
The librarian must ensure that our all our patrons can participate in today’s online, connected environment. Strategies to reach-out, help and nurture those not born digital, need to be a part of every library’s mission. The public library and the community college are ground zero for locating and embracing this cohort. As the paradigm of the library continues to shift to online delivery, we can share our successes and frustrations.
38% of CLA Survey respondents (feedback on 2009 conference) wanted this topic covered in 2010. Please add comments to flesh out what this means for you...
The library is more than a quiet place to study, getting the public on board with this.

What are some libraries doing to become more responsive to their customer's and their needs? What could libraries be doing they are not doing now? How can a library better understand the various experiences of using a library from the customer's perspective? What ideas from other environments might be transfered to the library that will benefit customers?
Have experts willing to meet one on one with anyone for ten minutes in the area of their expertise. So the expert can sign up with "I've managed a major library remodeling project, pick my brain!" or "I've handled the creation of a new literacy program, pick my brain!" or "I've managed selecting, purchasing, and implementing a new ILS in the last year, pick my brain!" and then others can sign up for ten minutes of that person's time, just out on the convention floor, like a poster session.
Restore somehow what Infopeople was offering in their booth up until last year, the 15 minute mini-presentations that are easy to drop by and attend, somewhere central, like the floor, and very interesting and quick.
38% of CLA Survey respondents (feedback on 2009 conference) wanted this covered in 2010. Please add comments to flesh out what this means for you - and how it might help.
An opportunity to chat with the State Librarian in an informal setting, short time period, like what was offered in the Infopeople booth.
An opportunity for owners of various e books to bring devices for show and tell. Infopeople's petting zoo plus the owner there to show how they perform various functions, discuss their personal reasons for selecting this reader over that one, what they have discovered is the best/worst things, etc.
Succession planning is a very hot topic in most organizations, but the typical "retire at 55" notion does not hold true anymore due to the challenging economy and the unique characteristics of generations currently in the workforce. It would be great to hear more about fostering cross-generational collaboration and understanding in the library.
There are so many research needs to be addressed locally on state-wide.
Let's provide a panel discussion on getting this connection going so that grad school students in Library management take on needed projects that Libraries cannot take on. Mutually beneficial and real life exercises!

Example: I actually did this with Chris Woods in the San Jose Program where he did the analysis of how to close a periodicals area and change the function to a computer lab. When the money was available three months later, I had the plan!

A day of the living library @ the 2010 conference - community "books" for conference attendees to "check out". We (staff) sometimes forget to immerse ourselves in our customers' experiences. Both content and experience :)
Panel of California Native American Authors. Good books on Native Americans by Native Americans
what's it like moving from separate service desks/areas to one combined service point? what training, furnishings, equipment, etc. is needed? how does it work?
We are a $13 BILLION industry nationwide ... California being no slouch here. Why aren't more vendors like DELL, MICROSOFT, YOUTUBE, ITUNES, HULU, SONY, etc. at our conferences ... either as an exhibitor or a contributor to the discussions?? We have more than just books and databases to offer, and we DO buy computers and other technologies ... why aren't these vendors taking us seriously???
